Darwin completely ruined our plans. I mean, it’s hard to do a lap of Australia in 12 months if you stay in the Northern Territory for 5 of them! We stayed in a few different spots. This gave me an opportunity to try some different clubs… and find the best BJJ in Darwin. The first place I trained at was De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu in Marrara.
BJJ in Darwin: How I came to train at De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu
Darwin is awesome. So awesome that we ended up doing a 3 month house sit in a suburb called Alawa.
When I googled ‘BJJ Darwin’ there was a few places pretty close to where we were staying. I’d previously done a few casual visits at De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Adelaide, so this place seemed to be the obvious choice.
Where in Darwin is De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu?
There are two clubs in Darwin! One of them is De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Darwin, and the other is De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Marrara.
If you’ve been to Darwin before, you’ve probably driven past the Marrara Sports Complex. At the rear of the gymnastics and table tennis complex is a dedicated area for Judo and Jiu Jitsu.
It has a permanent mat area with a sprung floor. Awesome for takedowns. And not putting mats away. There’s massive fans that do a decent job of keeping the place relatively cool. Awesome if you’re not a Darwinite, and haven’t acclimatised.
De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Marrara: First impressions
The first word that comes to mind is ‘welcoming’. When I called and spoke to the head coach David, I could tell this place was geared towards both visitors and beginners. Even though my first visit was going to be a No Gi session, I was assured that there were spare Gi’s to use too.
This welcoming attitude continued when I walked in the door. Definitely casual visit friendly.
I was only 1/2 right though. Yes, this was a ‘beginner friendly’ place. On the mat were people who’d only just started their jiu jitsu journey. But, the high proportion of Black, Brown and Purple Belts showed that this definitely wasn’t just a place that was geared towards beginners.
My experience as a visitor at De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Marrara
I’m impressed by coaches that put in time before each session to prepare a lesson plan.
You know what impresses me more? When a coach can start a class by asking every person if there’s anything they’re stuck on. And then instantly deliver a session as if they’d spent the day researching the move, it’s variations and submission options.
Over the course of several visits, this club was one where there was consistently:
- A lot of jiu jitsu knowledge dished out every session. This was a place where you could learn A LOT
- Content that was applicable to all levels. Techniques were taught that were white belt friendly… but also had senior belts asking clarifying questions
- A great attitude at open mat. Training partners always seemed to be willing to mix up drilling with light or harder rolling
- A welcoming attitude to beginners and casuals.
What other people say about De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Marrara
Between the De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Marrara Facebook page and Google Reviews, there’s only 9 ratings and reviews… but they’re all 5 stars.
“What a great place to train, I would like to thank Dave and his team, making me feel welcome over the past week and just wish to advise if any one comes up to visit the top end, this is the place to go. Can’t appreciate you guys enough!”
And this one…
“Coaching by David Nicholl is second to none. The guy has multiple black belts in Judo, Japanese Jiujitsu and Brazilian Juijitsu and proven excellence with comprehensive wins internationally including the Brazillieros (if you don’t know the Brazillieros, you don’t know jits). Fully sprung matts and the friendliest atmosphere with the most experienced practitioners Darwin has seen. For pure Brazilian Jiujitsu form, there’s no better choice. Come and start your new vice!!
We lead, others follow. 👊”
De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Marrara: Would I go back?
This might give you a hint: I ended up buying a new Gi through the club. It has De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu patches on it.
I’ll be packing this Gi every time I travel and end up doing BJJ in Darwin. I guess I’ll be on the look-out for other Peter De Been affiliated clubs around the country too!
We’ll end up living in Darwin at some point. When we do, I hope it’s not too far from Marrara. For someone who’ll be doing 3,000 km over the next two weeks, I hate driving.
So is De Been 100% Jiu Jitsu Marrara the Best BJJ in Darwin?
To be honest, I don’t know. I didn’t bother trying anywhere else. The relaxed nature of this place and the amount you could learn… I didn’t see the need to go elsewhere. Even when I was staying out at Palmerston.
Or is all BJJ in Darwin like this one?
