Coffs Harbour was a turning point in our travels. It was when things finally started to get warm. It also marked the first time in many months I got on the mat… so how was the BJJ in Coffs Harbour?
BJJ Coffs Harbour: How I came to train at C4 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts
While doing a lap of Australia in our caravan, my wife set me the goal of visiting a BJJ class in each state. Challenge accepted!
I was Googling ‘BJJ Coffs Harbour’ within about 5 seconds.
The top search result was “C4 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts”. I know the first result doesn’t always mean the best result… so I did some Facebook stalking.
The timetable looked pretty good. A lot of class options. This said to me that you could get a lot out of this place no matter where you are in your grappling journey. As well as a Kids and Juniors program, there’s:
- BJJ Fundamentals
- BJJ Advanced
- No Gi BJJ All
- BJJ All Levels
- Open Mat
But the thing that caught my attention was the reviews. There were several comments from other travelers who had dropped in for a casual. From their comments, it was pretty clear that this was a place that welcomed visitors. I was sold.
Where is C4 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts?
It’s tucked away in a semi-industrial part of North Boambee Valley, a suburb of Coffs Harbour.
It’s unit 3 of 5 in a larger complex, and Google Maps had some trouble finding it. Google Maps’ ‘street view’ doesn’t show where it is either. Anyways, that’s the excuse I’m sticking to for becoming “geographically embarrassed” when I was trying to find the place!
So, if you want to train at C4 after reading this review?
Make sure you leave a few minutes earlier the first time you go there.
C4 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts: First impressions
The first thing I noticed when I walked into C4 was the people. Not just that there was a lot of people, but how everyone was interacting. They were already on the mat warming up, with both solo and partner drilling. And chatting to each other.
This struck me as a place that people come, try it, and stick around. For both the grappling and a club culture.
The place was well decked out too. Even though it’s a pretty big place, they’ve made good use of the space with mats, bags, an octagon, pull-up bars, rings, etc. It looked like the sort of place that, if you joined up, you wouldn’t need a normal gym membership.
My experience as a visitor at C4 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts
I went for a ‘No Gi BJJ All’ session. The review I put on their Facebook page pretty much sums it up:
“I’m a visitor to Coffs, and trained as a casual visit. Very welcoming, great bunch of guys, knew their stuff, and great teaching style. Everyone was approachable in open mat, never sat around, always got an invite to roll. Recommend to any visitors, or locals for that matter. Chris is a legend!”
The level of detail in instruction was good. It wasn’t just about the techniques being taught, but also reinforcing key points about the position that it was being taught in. It looked like somewhere that you’d want to go to the fundamental classes even if you were no longer a beginner.
What other people say about C4 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts
If you go to the C4 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Facebook page, there’s 38 ratings and reviews for a 4.9 average.
(One person left a 1-star rating 4 years ago, but without leaving a comment… should that even be counted?)
What’s really cool is that if you’re keen to get in some BJJ in Coffs Harbour, there’s other travellers who’ve dropped in:
“Visiting from Alice Springs I had the opportunity to do a class and open roll with the C4 team. Highly recommend any Jits travellers to hit them up for visit 👌🏼 great mentality and welcoming crew. Thanks again C4 👊🏼”
“Came to visit for holidays and met some very cool bjj people. Sat respectfully on the mat and never waited too long for a roll. Very welcoming environment. Good coach and lots of people to roll with”
“I visited c4 whilst on holidays and totally enjoyed the rolls and the structure of the class. Chris was very welcoming and an awesome instructor. See you next time I’m in town.”
